Alors que l'accéléromètre mesure la vibration absolue du point où est fixé le capteur, la capteur inductif mesure la distance entre la capteur et sa cible. Dans le domaine des machines tournantes à paliers lisses, ce type de capteur permet de mesurer la vibration relative de l'arbre dans son palier.

La capteur mesurant la distance entre l'extrémité de la sonde et la cible, la mesure peut être du type statique (GAP DC) ou dynamique (Vibration AC).
